Poston papers, 1844-1891.

The bulk of the collection consists of biographical material about Poston and transcripts of his writings. Includes a copy of Poston's Reconnaissance in Sonora, 1854, copies and translation of the Dona Ana County Record book, 1856-1861, a mining certificate for the Arizona Mining Company, 1864, a photocopy of Poston's address book, and House Resolution No. 12 condemning Poston's opposition to the election of John N. Goodwin as territorial delegate to Congress. There are also typed copies of manuscripts written by Poston for publication and original letters concerning the Arizona Pioneers' Historical Society. The Dona Ana County Record book, 1856 to 1861, contains the earliest U.S. property records for southern Arizona.

First Territorial governor of Arizona, attorney, U.S. House of Representatives congressman from Maine; named by Lincoln as first governor of Arizona territory. Goodwin called the first meeting of the Arizona legislature to convene at Prescott in the fall of 1864. He was elected delegate to Congress in 1865 and retired in 1867. He died in California in 1887.
